Your betting position is a huge factor in evaluating your pokerhand and deciding what action you want to take. It’s generally accepted that being the last to act in a hand is the best betting position to have. When you’re the last to act, you get to see what everyone else at the poker table does, and you can get a read on their hands. If you’re among the first to act, you’re basically flying blind. You’re vulnerable because you don’t have any idea what anybody else is holding, and you’re giving the table an idea of what you’ve got based on how you’re playing. In addition, you don’t know if someone who acts after is going to raise you and force you to decide whether or not to put more of your money at risk.
When you’re last to act, evaluate your cards based on how the other players act. If you’ve got median pocket cards, say a low pocket pair or an Ace with a low kicker, if everyone checks, they all may have worse and it could be a good idea to call and hope for a good flop or raise to try to get some blind without worrying that someone will raise behind you.
Pay attention to your betting position-it’ll tell you a lot about what you should do. Just another perk of paying attention at the poker table.
