Real-time Workflow Simplified Production for ETO Manufacturers

Posted by admin on in Uncategorized

Real-time data automates workflow management for processes used by engineer- and made-to-order manufacturers. Chuck Stewart, Executive Vice President with Encompix ETO ERP software noted, “Workflow Management simplifies production. Based on their security clearance, Encompix offers employees real-time data they can use to perform daily tasks. Encompix has been designed around the expected workflow of engineer-to-order and make-to-order manufacturers, making it simpler for people to perform normal business processes.”

Specific benefits: * Once the job BOM is established the engineers have the option to release the BOM to purchasing. * The parts become immediately available to the buyer so he can place the purchase order. * Upon receipt of the purchased goods, those goods flagged for inspection divert immediately to the inspector’s “What Do I Need to Inspect Today?” screen. * Material is either assigned to WIP or inventory or immediately returned to the vendor.

In addition to the real time foundation, Encompix provides an “Alert Messaging System,” to facilitate communication among users throughout the work flow process. Encompix includes many standard alerts that may be activated for one or more users of the system. Additional alerts can be setup and customized to specific workflow tasks.

Encompix (www.encompix.com) has filled the manufacturing software requirements of Engineer-to-Order companies since 1992. The company name reflects the commitment to developing business application solutions that encompass the complex areas of project-based and job-based manufacturing. Encompix provides ETO manufacturers with a competitive advantage by improving bottom line results.

According to Thomas R. Cutler, spokesperson for the ETO Institute (www.etoinstitute.org), “Encompix continues to capture significant marketshare in the ETO environment because few other ERP vendors truly understand the nuances and significant distinctions of the ETO process versus the repetitive manufacturing process. Encompix now has more than 200 of the leading ETO manufacturing firms in North America using their ERP Software solution.”

    Astounding Fridges Online

Posted by admin on December 30, 2008 in Uncategorized

If you are surveying the market for the most optimal deal on fridges and freezers looking online will be an amazing way to make sure you conserve precious time and cash. Don’t squander your precious time looking round numerous high street retail outlets in a search for the leading deals – all you have to do is simply get to your personal computer and log on and a whole new exciting universe of fridges awaits you on the internet.

Nevertheless, with multitudinous online shops how do you know which store might make sure you conserve your cash on fridges while nonetheless ensuring you get a high quality item. As usual best practice if you acquire your new appliance from a retailer on your high-street then you certainly should not realistically have any qualms at all about purchasing your fridge from their website, and as you all realise that you might commonly find much better value price tags on-line.

Briefly reading over a good shoppers guide is consistently the best place to begin When you are looking for fridges – buyers guides are ofttimes stuffed with a great wealth of data and furthermore effectively bring up points you possibly could not have thought through by yourself. These important issues include but are not limited to; energy consumption, further features & total capacity among further things.

Don’t choose to always go with the lowest price – uncommonly commonly the initial price you happen upon on a web-site might often not include VAT or delivery costs and when you finally reach the card payment stage you conceivably might be charged a lot more than you initially imagined. Fridges are a big investment so it’s important to choose wisely.

When do you require it by? Not all on line shops offer speedy home delivery and if your current fridge has recently broken you might often not wish to wait two weeks for your brand new fridge So constantly find out what your estimated home delivery date shall be.

Find out the return policy – fridges are a difficult item to purchase; sometimes they look fantastic in the showroom or on a website but when you get it to your house you realise it doesn’t match your kitchen at all. Therefore, you should always be careful.

Cisco CCNA Exam Tutorial: Route Summarization

Posted by admin on in Uncategorized

Preparing to pass the CCNA exam and earn this important Cisco certification? Route summarization is just one of the many skills you’ll have to master in order to earn your CCNA. Whether it’s RIP version 2, OSPF, or EIGRP, the CCNA exam will demand that you can flawlessly configure route summarization.

Route summarization isn’t just important for the CCNA exam. It’s a valuable skill to have in the real world as well. Correctly summarizing routes can lead to smaller routing tables that are still able to route packets accurately – what I like to call “concise and complete” routing tables.

The first skill you’ve got to have in order to work with route summarization is binary math; more specifically, you must be able to take multiple routes and come up with both a summary route and mask to advertise to downstream routers. Given the networks 100.16.0.0 /16, 100.17.0.0 /16, 100.18.0.0 /16, and 100.19.0.0 /16, could you quickly come up with both the summary address and mask? All you need to do is break the four network numbers down into binary strings. We know the last two octets will all convert to the binary string 00000000, so in this article we’ll only illustrate how to convert the first and second octet from decimal to binary.

    100 16 = 01100100 00010000

    100 17 = 01100100 00010001

    100 18 = 01100100 00010010

    100 19 = 01100100 00010011

To come up with the summary route, just work from left to right and draw a line where the four networks no longer have a bit in common. For these four networks, that point comes between the 14th and 15th bits. This leaves us with this string: 01100100 000100xx. All you need to do is convert that string back to decimal, which gives us 100 for the first octet and 16 for the second. (The two x values are bits on the right side of the line, which aren’t used in calculating the summary route.) Since we know that zero is the value for the last two octets, the resulting summary network number is 100.16.0.0.

But we’re not done! We now have to come up with the summary mask to advertise along with the summary route. To arrive at the summary route, write out a mask in binary with a “1″ for every bit to the left of the line we drew previously, and a “0″ for every bit to the right. That gives us the following string:

    11111111 11111100 00000000 00000000

Converting that to dotted decimal, we arrive at the summary mask 255.252.0.0. The correct summary network and mask to advertise are 100.16.0.0 252.0.0.0.

For the CCNA exam, emphasis is put on knowing how to advertise these summary routes in RIPv2 and EIGRP. For both of these protocols, route summarization happens at the interface level – it’s not configured under the protocol. On the interface that should advertise the summary route, use the command “ip summary-address”. Here are examples of how the above summary route would be configured on ethernet0 in both RIPv2 and EIGRP.

    R1(config-if)#ip summary-address rip 100.16.0.0 255.252.0.0

    R1(config-if)#ip summary-address eigrp 100 100.16.0.0 255.252.0.0

The main difference between the two is that the EIGRP command must specify the AS number – that’s what the “100″ is in the middle of the EIGRP command. Since RIPv2 does not use AS numbers, there’s no additional value needed in the configuration.

For OSPF, the commands differ. If you’re configuring inter-area route summarization, use the “area range” command; if you are summarizing routes that are being redistributed into OSPF, use the summary-address command under the OSPF routing process on the ASBR. Neither of these are interface-level commands.

I speak from experience when I tell you that practice makes perfect on the CCNA exam, especially with binary and summarization questions. The great thing about these questions is that there are no grey areas with these questions – you either know how to do it or you don’t. And with practice and an eye for detail, you can master these skills, pass the exam, and become a CCNA. Here’s to your success!

    Memory Leaks: Our Minds

Posted by admin on December 29, 2008 in Uncategorized

Anybody who has spent a lot of time studying computers knows that computers suffer from memory leaks. Lost information and *breaks* seem to be the norm with today’s technology. Could we be experiencing the same problem? What about our human memories? Could we (regardless of our age) be experiencing the same thing? Should we rely on our memories? Should we view our memories as incorruptible and as the sacred truth?

Within a computer, a “memory leak occurs when the program loses the ability to free the memory” (Wikipedia). Basically, this same phenomenon occurs with people too. For people, the older our memories are, studies have shown that our thoughts and conceptions become more and more distorted with time. Even at that, if several people observe the same situation, and for as many people, there are multiple viewpoints and memories about it.

As part of my formal education, this color theory was taught as part of the curriculum, because artists should not rely on their memories for proportions, colors, textures, and details about the objects, rooms, or scenes they attempt to recreate or design for. Our memories drop off information automatically, and we should never expect to have absolute recall of anything.

For even the simplest forms and shades of colors, our memories do not record absolute information (even moments later). Granted, there are different reasons for this. But short of getting into all the reasons, let’s just explore one scenario. An artist is painting an object set before him or her, and upon removal of the object, the artist no longer is able to accurately depict the exact colors or details about it any longer. This scenario includes only the removal of the object in question.

To test this color theory, purchase two large boxes of color crayons. Cut-out several squares of paper and have someone else color them from the same box of color crayonsyou want to have complete objectivity and eliminate knowing which colors were used. You may have to use a duplicate box of crayons so that you are not eliminating colors by measuring the tips of the used crayons. Then, have someone hold the swatch up for you to see and after the swatch is removed, try to match the shade of the color. It’s a lesson of humility if nothing else. It demonstrates how faulty our memories areeven moments later. (Revised 2/16/2006)

A Full Moon’s Coming. Use Your EQ and Don’t Turn Into a Werewolf!

Posted by admin on in Uncategorized

The full moon due on the 25th (of March) was called the Maple Sugar Moon by the Chippewas because that’s when the sap flowed the freest. According to the Celts, it’s the Nuinne, whose purpose is The Weighing of Truth.

Our ancestors were vitally interested in the celestial bodies and studied them carefully because they needed to know when to plant and when to harvest. Some cultures, like the Chinese and the Celts, even based their calendar on the lunar year.

Full moons always had particular fascination – if nothing else, they’re hard to miss – and they figure in folklore from many cultures. They’re associated with everything from werewolves, to the pull of the tides, to increased crimes of violence, to the lunacy of falling in love and other aberrant behavior. Well, “lunatic” comes from the Latin word for the moon, “luna.”

The full moon is also thought to bring on childbirth. According to at least one hospital administrator, it’s not a myth. In “Moonstruck?” written by reporter Robert Lovinger, Debbie Raposo, director of women’s and children’s health at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, at the time the article was written, said she’d actually tried to staff her maternity unit with that in mind.

“Clearly, more babies are born around the full moon,” Raposo was quoted as saying.

A statistical analysis of her hospital showed a correlation, though other studies have not found statistical relevance. See: http://www.s-t.com/daily/01-99/01-31-99/e01li135.htm . In fact, most scientific research disproves any lunar effects on behavior. I. W. Kelly, professor of educational psychology at the U. of Saskatchewan and chairman of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal did some research back in 1986 on the lunar effect in collaboration with an astronomer from Colorado State University. His meta-analysis (a study of studies) found too many statistical errors in the original studies. Back Kelly came in 1996, along with Rotton and Culver, to study the lunar effects on the homicide rate, traffic accident, calls to the police and fire department, domestic violence, birth of babies, suicides, assassinations, casino payout rates, kidnappings, aggression by pro hockey players, violence in prisons, major disasters, agitated behavior by nursing home residents, assaults, alcoholism, and more. They found no significant correlations. See: http://skepdic.com/fullmoon.html .

Why is it, then, that people in the trenches, like bartenders, ER physicians, maternity nurses, policemen and psychiatrists (at least one has written a book called “The Lunar Effect”), and my next door neighbor all attest to the fact that things hop up around the time of a full moon? And why is it in the folklore? Is there something we know intuitively about it?

Raposo said the psychiatric ward at her hospital noticed the same effect, and the local police captain at the time, one Capt. Paul Cardalino, noted that “during full moons, it seems there are more problems with family disputes domestic violence, and people who are unstable.”

A minister friend of mine said she “knew” the full moon affected people because she’d worked in an old folks’ home. “They kept trying to get out when there was a full moon,” she told me, “and we’d find them wandering the streets if we didn’t lock the doors.”

There’s at least one study confirming — Dr. Leiber’s study (J Clin Psychiatry. 1978. May 39(5): 385-92), postulates “the existence of a biological rhythm of human aggression which resonates with the lunar synodic cycle.” Interesting that this is the study that finds that psychiatric emergency room visits decline around the full moon. (This isn’t necessarily good news though, folks; those who enter the P-ER are there to get help. If they aren’t there, where are they and what are they doing?)

Alan Hirshfeld, professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, also felt it’s been disproven, but added, I assume without prompting, “People may tend to get more romantically inclined…”

There are also all those theories about the tides and the fact that we humans are 80% water. Cecil Adams, in his “The Straight Dope” ( http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_337.html ) points out that other things besides the moon exert influence on us: “Researchers have calculated that a mother holding her baby exerts 12 million times the tide-raising force on the child that the moon does, simply by virtue of being closer.”

It sounds like the researchers were talking about physical movement. We’re talking about emotions, very watery things indeed. But who exerts more emotional pull on an infant than the mother holding it? You see how complex it all is …

It also should be noted that the nearness of the moon affects the tides, not the phase of the moon. Kelly, Rotton, and Culver attributed the persistent myths to four things: (1) media effects; (2) folkore and tradition; (3) misconception (i.e., the tidal force of the moon depends on its distance from earth, not its phase), and (4) cognitive biases (all bad events don’t occur during the full moon and all events that occur during the full moon aren’t bad!).

So where does Emotional Intelligence come in? Emotions are strong and they’re also contagious. Some of us are more open to “suggestions” than others, and more effected by the emotions of those around us, and by tradition, the media, and so forth. EQ is about self-awareness. I invite you to observe things around this full moon. Self-management is key to emotional intelligence, and related to success in relationships, career, and life, as well as to our wellness. Here’s how it works. IF the full moon exerts pressure on us to act irrationally, so do other things, like PMS, heat, toxic people, crowded conditions and stress. IF others around you were to start acting more looney than usual, they also do during conflict, bankruptcy, stock market fluctuations, personal crises, and stress; and,

IF other people ‘believe in’ the lunar effect, it’s part of reality. No matter what ‘effects’ are going, using your EQ can help you function at your best, and manage your environment positively.

The werewolf, metaphorically, is about letting your reptilian brain take over and hijack your reasoning. You get too tired, too hungry, too stressed, or are assaulted, and you turn into a ‘beast,’ yes??

We have to cope with emotional “pulls” all the time. Because of our limbic connection with other humans, which is what makes our bonding possible, we can tell what others feel, and it can get to us. Being aware of how you’re affected by other things – people, circumstances, your own emotions, and possibly full moons – is knowledge you can use for better self- and other-management. Then you can respond to circumstances, not just react to them in a knee-jerk, sometimes beastly, fashion, yes?

Does the full moon cause aberrant behavior, including that craziest behavior of all – falling in love? We don’t know. We do know the full moon is beautiful.

I think of a cruise I took during a full moon not long ago. Who wouldn’t fall in love standing on the deck of a ship watching the full moon rise over the endless ocean with no signs of civilization in sight – fall in love with the person standing next to you, the one you left back home, with the night, with life, with the wonder of it all? “And all the night’s magic seems to whisper and hush. And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush.” (Van Morrison, “Moondance”)

It’s your full moon. Make it a good one! Use your EQ.

    Temperature Control: Effective

Posted by admin on in Uncategorized

Temperature control is the control of the amount of heated or cooled air that is in an area. By monitoring these levels, temperature can be adjusted to fit the needs and the desires of the people in the area. In most cases, a thermostat is used as a gauge to allow this process to happen. Temperature control can be set at whatever is needed but this does have a direct bearing on the resources that are used as well. Managing effective temperature control goes beyond this though.

For example, if you are a business owner with a store that is surrounded by glass, your thermostat may read 68 degrees in the winter but will most likely feel much lower. In maintaining temperature control, you need to do more than just regulate the air you are forcing in. You need to have proper insulation on the windows, in the walls and by doors. There are of course many ways to do this, but the most effective is insulation. Temperature control can be better maintained when the room is blanketed and protected from the outside elements.

Yet another point to be made about temperature control is that it needs to be protected from human error. For many, you can not go to the thermostat to turn it on and off, this would not be useful. But, the thermostat will monitor the air’s temperature and turn on the units to cool or heat the room as needed. But, in temperature control that you want to maintain efficiency so programming the correct temperatures for day and evening and overnight hours is helpful. Because you can safely lower the temperatures on a cold night and raise them slightly on a hot day, you can better manage the effectiveness and the cost of the temperature control. How you manage temperature control is up to you but you can benefit from using any of these methods.

Big Brother Bill: It’s 1984 all over Again!

Posted by admin on in Uncategorized

Most of the commentary over the George Orwell’s novel, “1984″
that occured in that year, was derision, saying that now
it was quite clear that the eerie picture painted of “Big
Brother” was unlikely, and certainly not possible.

Now Microsoft has proposed a sweeping web initiative which it has
dubbed “dot Net” or .Net in which they would be the “host” for the
personal information of every single online consumer. The idea
has some appeal as a possible way to access information from a
central bank of servers using XML code to withdraw selected info
from the vast database of personal information about anyone
    from a central “host”.

To have web access to that information might save the life of an
accident victim allergic to medications or allow you to withdraw
cash from any bank via your cell phone.

The privacy implications though, are downright spooky. Now, you
combine that information with newly available science-fiction-
like “face-mapping” software tested this year at the “Snooper-
Bowl” where certain law-enforcement agencies would have
access to private personal information and high resolution video
scans of the crowd and you have — Big Brother. Combine that with
“Telematics” being used by car rental agencies to track the location
and even the speed of their fleet of cars and now it gets real ugly.

This is the George Orwell novel, “1984″ come to life, a little late,
but it’s definitely here. Carry a cell phone? It will be federally
mandated that your phone must use global positioning technology
so that when used to dial emergency services via 911, you can be
located to within twenty feet or less. It doesn’t take a genius to
realize that could be used by Big Brother just as easily without
    your knowledge.

Any idea if your boss is peering over your shoulder? More than three-
quarters of corporate employers monitor employees in multiple ways.
The following is from Onvia.com web article on workplace monitoring.

“Although the average percentage of workers with office e-mail and
Internet connections remained relatively constant, overall active
monitoring grew to 78 percent from 74 percent in 2000. The overall
figure includes such measures as storing and reviewing computer
files (36 percent), video recording of employees on the job
(15 percent), recording and reviewing telephone messages
(12 percent), and storing and reviewing voice mail (8 percent)

Other forms of surveillance, including telephone numbers called
and time spent on the phone, logged computer time and video
surveillance for security purposes brought the total for all
forms of monitoring to 82 percent, up from last year’s 78
percent and from 67 percent in 1999.”

    http://www.news.onvia.com/x20557.xml

Consider that Microsoft provides the desktop software to most
of the corporate world and it doesn’t take much of a stretch of
the imagination to see them building in their own monitoring tools.

Add to that, “Smart Tags” that are being built into Microsoft
software so that all of their products are tethered together and
they now have access to virtually all of your information from
Outlook, Word, your calendar, your email addresses, your files,
your spreadsheets and your Powerpoint presentations.

The following quote came from a large computing company’s lead
    engineer, he was promised anonymity:

    <- begin quote ->

“Bill has held back technology in order to control the growth at his
own pace and suck up every ounce of revenue along the way. He is a
genius when it comes to business – probably the smartest business
    man to ever live!

When he released MSDOS (early 80’s) there were plenty of multi-
tasking OSs available – he released Windows NT in the mid 90’s
over ten years after the technology was available on the PC! You
have to be pretty smart to hold off that kind of technology for
    over ten years!

The consumer is just now starting to receive the benefits of
multi-tasking OS’s with Windows 2000 and still has no idea
how much technology they are missing!

He uses his install base of (90+%) of the client market to control
and kill every standard in his greedy profit hungry companies way.

Now he is trying to kill Java with SOAP, SNMP with CIMOM … etc.

He killed pop3 with exchange server – you have to buy your corporate
email server from Microsoft. No open email standards will stand in
his way – eliminate the competition!

The bottom line is Bill is the smartest business man in the software
industry and controls the pace of technology. You will not get the
technology until Bill can control and own the market!”

    <- End of quote ->

Bill Gates made $931 million as Microsoft shares rose about 2
percent, better than the Upside 150’s 1 percent gain. The Microsoft
chairman was worth $50.6 billion at the end of trading on June 29,
based on his company stock holdings. That would finance the Big
Brother centralized database called .Net quite easily.

    Are you ready for 1984?

Cisco CCNP / BSCI Exam Tutorial: IP Version 6 Zero Compression

Posted by admin on December 27, 2008 in Uncategorized

BSCI exam success is all part of becoming a CCNP, and part of that success is now learning the basics of IP Version 6, or IPv6. One of the most difficult parts of learning IPv6 concepts is the radically different addressing scheme that IPv6 uses as compared to IPv4. Just look at these sample addresses:

    Typical IPv4 address: 129.14.12.200

    Typical IPv6 address: 1029:9183:81AE:0000:0000:0AC1:2143:019B

As you can see, IPv6 isn’t exactly just tacking two more octets onto an IPv4 address!

I haven’t met too many networkers who really like typing, particularly numbers. You’ll be happy to know there are some rules that will shorten those addresses a bit, and it’s a very good idea to be fluent with these rules for your exam.

You remember from your CCNA studies that there’s no difference between an upper-case letter and lower-case letter in hexadecimal. That’s one of three basic rules you need to know when working with IPv6 addressing. The other factors deal with all the zeroes you’ll run into in IPv6 addresses! One of these rules is the rule of zero compression.

The rule of zero compression states that if an address contains consecutive fields of zeroes, they can be expressed with two colons. It doesn’t matter if you have two fields or eight, you can simply type two colons and that will represent all of them. The key here is that you can only do this once in an IPv6 address. This is referred to as zero compression. Here’s an example:

    Original format: 1234:1234:0000:0000:0000:0000:3456:3434

    Using zero compression: 1234:1234::3456:3434

Again, you must remember that you can only do this once in an IPv6 address expression.

What if there are zeroes in the address that don’t quite fit this rule? The next part of our IPv6 tutorial will deal with leading zero compression, another tool you can use to shorten these long, long addresses!
