Graduation Hats

A 14th century tradition has been observed in graduation ceremonies where the graduates wear regalia comprising of graduation hats, robes and cords. Traditionally, the hats were also known as mortarboards. The hats were referred as hoods and were symbolic of the passage of the students from one academic level to another. This tradition has been kept until modern times with very few changes with regard to the colors of the graduation hats. Initially, they were made from a black cloth. However in recent times, academic institutions may have their graduation regalia in different colors such as the colors representing the institution.
One can find graduation hats that are made from different materials. For instance, in the United Kingdom, one can find a very common type referred to as ‘folding skull’. This mortarboard is such that the skull part can be folded for ease of carrying and storing. The traditional mortarboard however had a rigid skull in that it could not be folded. It was also considered to be more appealing aesthetically. They are also said to fit the wearers better than the folding skull mortarboards. The right way to wear the graduation hats is to have the top board parallel part to the ground while the skull part is to the back of the head.
